The University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Dentistry, in collaboration with several international institutions, has made a significant breakthrough in the realm of dental health. They have successfully employed artificial intelligence (AI) to detect gum inflammation, or gingivitis, using intraoral photographs.

Published in the International Dental Journal, the study reveals that AI algorithms can scrutinize intraoral photographs to identify signs of gum inflammation, such as redness, swelling, and bleeding, with an accuracy rate exceeding 90%. The research involved experts from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, the School of Information Engineering at Guangdong University of Technology, and the Faculty of Dentistry at The National University of Malaysia. The team utilized a dataset comprising over 567 images of gums, showcasing varying inflammation levels, marking one of the pioneering efforts in leveraging AI for gum inflammation detection.

Dr Walter Yu-Hang Lam, the study’s lead researcher from HKU, highlighted the potential of AI in the early detection and management of gum diseases. He noted that many patients often neglect regular dental check-ups, only seeking professional help when they experience severe pain, often at advanced stages of dental diseases.
